The village of Corfe Castle is dominated by the dramatic ruins of its Norman castle, perched on a natural hill guarding the only gap in the Purbeck ridge. Destroyed by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War, the shattered towers remain one of England's most atmospheric ruins. The village itself is a picture-postcard collection of stone cottages, tea rooms, and the Swanage Railway steam train station. The surrounding Purbeck heathland is rich in wildlife.
