Medieval abbeys, castle ruins, and candlelit dining
Sherborne is arguably the most beautiful town in Dorset — possibly in England. Two castles, a medieval abbey, independent restaurants, and a market town atmosphere that hasn't been ruined by tourism. This itinerary is designed for couples who want history, good food, and somewhere that feels genuinely special.
Start at the Abbey — a working church that has stood on this site since 705 AD. The fan vaulting is among the finest in England. Entry is free (donations welcome). Allow 45 minutes to explore properly. The Abbey Bookshop next door is excellent for browsing.
The Abbey runs guided tours on Saturday mornings at 11am. They're free and genuinely informative.
Walk or drive the half mile to the ruins of Old Sherborne Castle — a 12th-century fortification built by Roger, Bishop of Salisbury. English Heritage manages the site. The views across the lake to the New Castle (still a private home) are exceptional. Allow 45 minutes.
The castle ruins are particularly atmospheric in the late afternoon when the light catches the stonework. If you're staying overnight, come back at sunset.
The town has a good range of independent restaurants and cafés. The Green on The Green is the best option for a proper lunch — locally sourced, well-executed, and not overpriced. Alternatively, The Digby Tap on Cooks Lane is a proper pub with good food and a relaxed atmosphere.
Book ahead for The Green, especially at weekends. It's popular with locals and visitors alike.
Sir Walter Raleigh built the New Castle in 1594 and it remains in the Wingfield Digby family today. The house opens on selected days (check website) but the gardens and grounds are open more regularly. The lakeside walk is beautiful in any season.
The castle hosts outdoor theatre and events in summer. Check the website for what's on during your visit.
Stay for dinner — Sherborne has several excellent restaurants within walking distance of each other. The town is quiet in the evenings and genuinely lovely. If you're making a weekend of it, The Eastbury Hotel on Long Street is the best place to stay.
