Studland Bay → Corfe Castle → Swanage seafront
This is the classic Dorset family day — a National Trust beach with shallow water, a ruined castle that children actually get excited about, and a traditional seaside town to finish. It works for toddlers and teenagers alike, which is rare.
Arrive early to beat the queues at the Knoll Beach car park. The shallow, calm water at Studland is ideal for young children — it's one of the safest swimming beaches in Dorset. The National Trust café opens at 9am for coffee and breakfast rolls. Dogs are welcome on Middle and South Beach year-round.
Walk south along the beach to Shell Bay for the best views across to Sandbanks. It's about 20 minutes each way and completely flat.
Drive the 8 miles inland to Corfe Castle — one of the most dramatic ruins in England. The village is picture-perfect and the castle itself is genuinely impressive for children. English Heritage manages the site. Allow 90 minutes to walk the full circuit of the ruins. The views from the top are extraordinary on a clear day.
Buy a combined ticket for Corfe Castle and the Swanage Railway — the steam train runs between Corfe and Swanage and children love it.
Drive or take the steam train the 6 miles to Swanage. The town beach is sandy and sheltered, perfect for a late-afternoon swim. The pier is free to walk and has great views. The high street has proper fish and chips, ice cream, and a good selection of independent shops.
The Swanage Railway steam train runs back to Corfe Castle if you need to collect a car. Check timetables at swanagerailway.co.uk.
Finish with fish and chips on the seafront at Swanage. The Cove Fish Bar on the High Street is consistently good. If you have energy left, the cliff path north of the town gives spectacular views back over the bay.
