A steam railway, a ruined castle and a secret swimming ledge — the Isle of Purbeck at its very best
About this day
This is one of our hand-crafted Dorset Days — a complete itinerary built around three locations that sit within a few miles of each other, so you spend your time exploring rather than driving. All stops, parking details, tips and food recommendations are included.
Begin the day at Swanage Station and board the heritage steam railway for the 6-mile journey to Corfe Castle station. The Swanage Railway is one of the finest preserved steam railways in Britain, running through the beautiful Purbeck Hills with views of the castle appearing dramatically as you approach. Trains run regularly throughout the day and the journey takes about 25 minutes each way. You can return by train or walk back via the castle.
The moment the ruins of Corfe Castle appear above the steam as you approach the station is genuinely magical.
Useful to know
Corfe Castle is one of Britain's most dramatic ruins — a Norman castle that was partially demolished by Parliamentarian forces after the English Civil War, leaving the iconic jagged silhouette that dominates the Purbeck Hills. The National Trust site includes the castle ruins, a visitor centre and the village of Corfe Castle below, with its pretty stone cottages and excellent pubs. Allow at least 2 hours to explore the castle and village properly.
The views from the castle keep over the Purbeck Hills and down to the sea are extraordinary — one of the great views in England.
Useful to know
Drive 20 minutes south to the clifftop above Dancing Ledge and walk down to one of the most extraordinary swimming spots in Dorset. Dancing Ledge is a flat limestone ledge at the base of the cliffs, with a rock pool blasted out of the stone in the early 20th century for the use of a local school. The ledge is accessible via a 30-minute walk from the clifftop car park and is a favourite with wild swimmers and climbers.
Swimming in the rock pool at Dancing Ledge, with the limestone cliffs rising above you and the sea beyond, is an unforgettable experience.
